Monthly Review - November, 2016

Welcome to my very first monthly review post.  This is where I get to tell you what I’ve been up to over the past month.  It is also my opportunity to share with you what has worked well and what hasn't along with the "why" behind my decisions.  Why did I choose to focus on Social Media and Twitter in November?  Read on to find out.

With this being my very first monthly post, I am a little nervous.  I hope to keep it short and simple, but at the same time shed a little light on why I’m reporting the metrics in this article.  If you have any suggestions on what I should be discussing in these monthly review articles, please let me know in the comments.

With that said, let’s get started!

November Happenings

Halloween is over and Thanksgiving is coming fast.  November is here and like many people my schedule became a little bit tighter.  Many days I was running errands or setting up Christmas lights during my lunch hour.  Through it all, I am very happy to look back and see that I was able to upload one video every week.

For November, this means 5 new videos were posted to YouTube!  (Two videos were posted on November 11th relating to the same topic).

My focus for November was marketing.  This was a long time coming and for you it may happen sooner in the process.  Why create content just to sit there?  Get it out there and let people see it.  Even let them hate it.  Hopefully they won’t, but that’s OK.  The point is, you can always improve on what you do.  If this November 'month in review' article stinks, then hopefully I will learn from it and come back stronger next month.

Video: How to Create an About Page in Zoho Sites

Blog Post: 11) The 11 Elements of an About Page (Nov. 20th)

This video and blog covered the 11 elements that make a great ‘About Page.’  This page is incredibly important when helping visitors determine how trustworthy you are.  I wanted to ensure I got this right the first time (ha, like that ever happens).  When creating the first version of the homepage, I wrote down whatever came to me at the moment.  This had no structure and was ‘admittedly’ pretty bad (video can be seen here.)  Not wanting to make the same mistake twice, I dedicated a lot of time writing and rewriting this page before creating the video.  An unexpected benefit was that I was able to analyze dozens of other peoples’ About Page and really focus on what they are writing.  This led me to find 11 different elements that make for good About Page content.  Please, if you haven’t read the blog post above, go check it out now.  As a bonus, it includes a FREE word document explaining these 11 elements in more detail.

Video: 12) Setup you Twitter Account and First Tweet

Blog Post: 12) Setting up a Twitter Profile (Dec. 1st)

Up to this point my videos have focused solely on creating a website and publishing content.  With this video I take the next step and show you how to setup Twitter and start using this platform to reach out to your audience.

While investigating Twitter and it's uses, I found the The Blog Millionaire’s podcast and decided to take his advice for following new Twitter users every day.  The hope is that many of these users will notice when they have a new follower and check out my profile, follow me back, and in the end connect with me.  So far this has worked out very well as you’ll notice I was able to grow my followers from 0 to 210 within the first month.  I can be honest with myself and realize that not all of these people are reading my posts or following through and checking out my website or video series.  But hopefully, I can get some of them to listen and eventually build a relationship that will foster a future sale.

November 18th

Video 1: 13) Why you should sign up for Instagram and NOT use it

For Instagram the thought process is very similar to Twitter.  You must spread your message if you hope to find, connect, and build an audience.  However, I am also a firm believer of taking baby steps.  I don’t suggest signing up for every Social Media platform and dedicating all of your time post updates that it takes away from the number one job of creating content.  With only one hour a day to work, it is important to stay focused.  The plan is to use Instagram simply as a placeholder.  If someone stumbles across my profile there, they’ll know that the best place to reach me is through Twitter.  Someday, when a good routine is in place, then I will start to incorporate Instagram and other social media platforms.

Video 2: 14) How to Add Social Media Links on Zoho Sites

This video closes the loop on Social Media.  Twitter links back to www.lunchhourweb.com and the website should drive visitors back to Twitter.  This video goes through the process for Zoho and also covers how to embed Twitter features such as the ‘Follow button’ and displaying your ‘Twitter feed’ within your site.

November 26th

Video: 15) Create a Blog Image using Inkscape

The last video of the month showcases how to create a Blog Images using one of my favorite tools: Inkscape.

These are images that appear at the top of a Blog post and describe what the article will be about.  It is also a nice visual at the beginning of the article and should help drive traffic back to your blog when posting on Social Media.

Metric Breakdowns

As you saw at the beginning of the article, I have published a few metrics that I’m going to be monitoring each month to help determine how the website is growing.  These metrics will also prove useful with identifying how the processes implemented that month have affected growth.

Website Views

If you’re using Zoho sites, this metric can be found by navigating to

My Sites >> Manage >> Statistics

This high level metric shows how many times the site was visited.  I plan to incorporate Google Analytics in a future video, but for now this will give me enough information to get started.

The table below shows each month since www.lunchhourweb.com was created.  As you can see, website traffic stood static averaging 93 views per month between June and October.  Starting in November, this number of tripled.

For now, I will attribute this spike to Twitter, but until I find a better tool to see where the traffic originated, this is only a guess.  If correct, then it becomes apparent that marketing through social media can have a tremendous effect on your growth and success.

YouTube Metrics

There are many metrics that can be found in YouTube such as watch times, average duration, likes, and more.  However, I suggest focusing on a few metrics at a time and work to improve the numbers.

Subscribers

Subscribers a count of how many people have seen your videos and have ‘liked’ you enough to Subscribe to your channel.  Each subscriber is a potential client.  More importantly, I’m watching this count closely as once I reach 100 subscribers I can create a custom URL.  Such as https://youtube.com/lunchhourweb.

November saw a 50% increase in subscribers and this is another big jump as the previous 5 months together only netted 6 subscribers.
While I realize these numbers are still very low; it is nice to see an increase and I’m going to again equate this to becoming more active in Social Media and starting to spread my message to other people.

Total Video Views

The numbers below are the total number of views for all of my videos on YouTube.

Over the course of November, this number again has risen quite dramatically.  I’m interested to see how this will reflect going on through December as I continue to post on Twitter about my videos and hopefully grow awareness to my channel.

Top Video Views

YouTube also gives the ability to view metrics on individual videos.  I have decided for this month to include my top video and see how well it has performed.

Top Video: 6) Create a website using Zoho sites. 222 views

Second: 8) Creating a blog using Zoho Sites with 52 views.

The obvious takeaway from this metric is that the top two performing videos have ‘Zoho Sites’ in the title.  This means that these two videos are likely appearing higher in search results and suggested videos within YouTube.  At this point it is too early to focus all of my content on Zoho products, but it does provide insight and I may consider creating some more custom videos on this topic in the near future.  I am also playing with the idea of taking snippets of these longer videos and posting them as separate videos.  The information has already been recorded, so it will take minimal work on my end to cut out a section and load a video.

Twitter Followers

The last metric I’m going to watch (for now) is Twitter Followers.  These are the number of people that see my tweets.  The higher this number, the more likely I am to hit an interested reader and drive traffic back to my site or YouTube playlist.

As discussed above, I have taken The Blog Millionaire advice and started following people in my industry.  From there, I started following 20 new followers every day.  The hope is that many of these people will notice when they have a new follower and check out my profile, follow me back, and hopefully connect.  At the current rate, I can project over 1,000 followers by March.  Now we just have to see if this trend continues!

Final Thoughts

All in all, November has been my most successful month in terms of numbers.  I have obtained more page views, video views, and Social Media followers than any of the months prior.  I equate this to having a plan with Twitter and sticking with it.

Throughout November I have also made various other small adjustments to my logo and banner images on my website, YouTube, and Twitter.  I highly suggest you do this as well.  Take time to review your earlier work and improve upon it.

Below you will see a change to the logo that incorporates an hourglass inside the “H” of LHW (LunchHourWeb).

I like the new design much better, but I still see room for improvement down the road.  As Robert Collier said “Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out.”

My sincerest hopes that this article has helped you in some way or at least allowed you to get to know me a little bit better.  I hope to hear from you with any thoughts or suggestions for future monthly reviews.  As always, have a blessed day and take care.

Sincerely,

Paul Stevens
